What Is One Electricity Unit Equal To?
One electricity unit is equal to one kilowatt-hour (1 kWh) of electrical energy. It measures how much electricity an appliance or household consumes over a period of time.
To calculate the average electricity cost per unit, use the following formula:
Rate per Unit = Electricity Bill Amount ÷ Units Consumed
For example, if your electricity bill is ₹1,000 for 200 units consumed, the average cost is:
₹1,000 ÷ 200 = ₹5 per unit.
How Does a Slab-Based Electricity Unit Rate Calculation Work?
Some electricity tariffs use consumption slabs, which means different portions of electricity consumption are charged at different rates. In such cases, the total energy charges are calculated by applying each rate to the units falling within its applicable slab.
For an illustrative example, assume the following rates:
- First 100 units: ₹3 per unit
- Next 100 units: ₹5 per unit
